The PIM shows the attribute updated correctly. The ERP sync completes. The ERP now shows a different value — the previous default, or a value that was supposed to be overridden.
This is the authoritative misassignment symptom: the ERP is writing last, which means it has effectively become the source of truth by default — even though the PIM should own this attribute.
Key indicators:
Why this happens: The ERP update logic fires after the PIM sync completes, overwriting the attribute field the PIM just set. Or the integration is sending the ERP's attribute value downstream instead of receiving the PIM's value — which means the write direction is reversed from what the architecture intended.

In our implementation experience, authoritative misassignment is the most common cause of attribute reversion in new PIM-ERP integrations. It usually surfaces when the integration was originally configured with the ERP as the primary product record system and the PIM was added later — the ownership assumptions from the original architecture carry forward even after the PIM is deployed.
The ERP updates an attribute — a classification, a pricing modifier, a supplier field. The PIM sync runs. The PIM now shows the previous value.
The ERP and PIM are in a write-loop, each one overwriting the other with each sync cycle. This is the overwrite rule conflict symptom: both systems have overwrite logic configured for the same attribute class, and whichever sync runs last wins — regardless of which system should be authoritative.

The sync sequence — which system runs first, which runs second — determines the outcome, but the outcome is always that one system's value overwrites the other's.

A custom attribute — one created for a specific channel, a supplier requirement, or an internal classification — exists in the PIM but does not appear in the ERP after sync.
The ERP update then overwrites the channel downstream with a record that does not include the custom attribute. This is the handoff field mapping gap symptom: the attribute was never added to the integration payload.

This symptom is the most fixable without IT involvement, assuming the integration tool allows field mapping updates. But it is also the most likely to be misdiagnosed — the attribute reappearing correctly in the PIM misleads teams into thinking the problem is in the ERP when the actual problem is in the handoff payload.

One-time events usually have a clear trigger — a specific product category, a particular ERP entity type, or a manual update made outside the normal workflow.
